Dance Theatre of Harlem will be in residence at TCU’s School for Classical & Contemporary Dance (SCCD) on February 6 & 7 – next week!!

The 2-day educational residency will feature numerous master classes and workshops in the SCCD, outreach into local high schools with dance programs, an open rehearsal, a FREE participatory community engagement event, and a public panel discussion with the executive and artistic leaders of DTH.

The attached DTH Print Flyer contains a QR code that will take users to the DTH Residency page on the SCCD website.  That page gives an overview of the residency and specific information about the public residency events.

The other document (DTH Panel_Virtual Access) gives information on how to access the Zoom Webinar of the Feb. 6 panel discussion with the artistic and executive leaders of DTH, moderated by yours truly.  I’m very much looking forward to that discussion with Virginia Johnson, Robert Garland, and Anna Glass, and you can access it from anywhere – just register for the Zoom webinar.

DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM LEGACY: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

A PANEL DISCUSSION

PANELISTS from DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM:

Virginia Johnson: Artistic Director

Anna Glass: Executive Director

Robert Garland: Resident Choreographer & Artistic Director Designate

SCCDance Assistant Professor Keith Saunders enjoyed a 40-year career at Dance

Theatre of Harlem prior to his appointment at TCU in 2018. He will moderate what

promises to be a lively discussion examining the impact, import, and legacy of the ballet

company created by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook in 1969. Mitchell was moved to

action by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He enlisted the help of his

friend and former teacher Karel Shook to start a school in Harlem, Mitchell’s home, to

provide education in classical ballet to children in the community, giving those young

people the opportunity to study and excel in the arts. From those beginnings, Dance

Theatre of Harlem, soon to celebrate its 54 th anniversary, has grown to become a world-

renowned institution credited with making the field of ballet world-wide more inclusive

and diverse.
